The university city of Salamanca built almost entirely of golden sandstone is one of Spain's most beautiful cities.

Its two cathedrals dominate the skyline while the wide pedestrianized streets are lined with the carved facades of palaces and churches. La Plaza Major is vast and spectacular and full of busy bars and restaurants.

The university, which dates from the 13th century, was during the reign of the catholic kings one of the most important seats of learning in Europe. The surviving college buildings pay testimony to a prestigious past.
